09-10-2009 Hundreds of poor residents along South Rail, Manila Bay hold rally

Hundreds of poor residents along South Rail and Manila Bay hold rally at HUDCC

Some 500 urban poor residents living along the South Rail in Laguna, Batangas and Cavite, and along the coastlines of Manila Bay held a rally at the Makati office of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) and a dialogue with housing officials on their demand for decent housing and livelihood opportunities.

Romy Cabugnason, spokesperson of Alyansa ng Maralitang Pilipino (AMP), said that “Thousands of families will be displaced by demolitions along the Calabarzon areas of South Rail and Manila Bay to give way to rehabilitation of the railway and clean up of the bay. But the urban poor are not garbage that should be thrown away to give way to so-called development. There is no real progress unless there is social justice.”

The Calabarzon urban poor assembled at Magallanes in Makati around noon and then marched to the HUDCC office by 1:00 pm. They then held a dialogue at 2:00 pm with HUDCC officials regarding their demands.

GMA must heed the people’s pulse and drop con-ass, term extension

The massive crowd that joined former President Cory Aquino’s funeral was not simply expressing grief but conveying support for her fight against dictatorship as shown by the sea of people flashing the laban sign. The laban sign was formerly a symbol of the struggle against the fascist Marcos, it has now assumed a meaning as a fight against the threat of a new tyranny. Gloria Arroyo’s spokespersons are denying that the Palace is threatened but for the first time since Edsa Tres, the regime has reason to be afraid of the spontaneous masses.

Gloria Arroyo should read the sign of the times and heed the pulse of the people. It is time for her to order a stop to con-ass and declare that she will not extend her term. She still has two weeks to do so until the anniversary of Ninoy’s assassination on August 21 that may be the next spontaneous expression of the people’s outrage.

It will not be too late for Gloria Arroyo to pay true respects to Cory Aquino by announcing that she is not seeking to remain in power, what could have been the most important part of her SONA speech that she did not say and merely glossed over by stating the fact that her term ends in 2010.

06-29-2009 Antipolo urban poor march on City Hall

Antipolo urban poor march on City Hall, hold noise barrage vs. con-ass

Some 200 urban poor marched this afternoon on the Antipolo city hall in time for a city council hearing to demand a moratorium on demolitions. The march-rally, the third in the last three months, was also in protest at Ordinance 294 that has led to a series of evictions. “The ordinance violates the provisions of the Urban Development and Housing Act (UDHA) which mandates that demolitions can only proceed if relocation is provided. We call on the Mayor to open negotiations with communities before the ordinance is implemented,” Arnold Evariso of the Alyansa ng Maralitang Pilipino (AMP).

After the rally at the city hall, the urban poor trooped around 4 p.m. to Shopwise Antipolo for a noise barrage against con-ass and cha-cha. Evariso stated that “We call on the people to make noise today or else we will wake up tomorrow with Gloria Arroyo remaining in power as prime minister. She is already earnestly campaigning with more than a dozen 15 trips to Pampanga in the last four months. There is no other reason for Gloria Arroyo’s visits except to woo voters for a run at the congressional seat now occupied by her son. Gloria Arroyo as a prime minister means the old dog returning with a new collar.”

The Partido ng Manggagawa (PM) also demanded a moratorium on evictions in the face of a rash of violent demolitions in the last two weeks. “We ask that Malacanang declare a moratorium on demolitions and a ban on violent evictions. The least that government can do in the midst of the economic crisis is to refrain from destroying the houses and livelihoods of the poor,” stated Renato Magtubo, chairperson of PM.

Appeal for Solidarity for Paul Yu Workers Struggle

The workers of Paul-Yu Phils. Corp., a factory in Mactan Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) II in Lapu-Lapu City producing lamp shades for the export and local market, have been on a week of work stoppage in support of seven suspended leaders of their workers association. The five days of work stoppage has partially paralyzed the operations of the company as around 400 workers have participated while only a hundred workers were left working.

The suspension of seven leaders of the Paul Yu workers are in retaliation for the protest action last May 8 and the filing of a case last May 21 against management’s numerous unfair labor practices. The preventive suspension on the seven was slapped by management supposedly for an “illegal strike” conducted last May 8.

Paul Yu management is turning the tables on the workers for it is the company that is guilty of illegal acts and unfair labor practice which is spelled out in the case the workers filed last May 21 at the Labor Department. Among these infractions is the three-day workweek implemented since December that lacks proper documentation and due notice with the Labor Department. Moreover, management is reducing the workdays for regular workers even as it continues to outsource 40% of its production to contractors.

Workers Oppose the Neoliberal Agenda behind GMA’s Cha-Cha

The majority of organized labor stands up in opposition to GMA’s con-ass and the neoliberal agenda behind cha-cha.

Ang Tindig ng Manggagawa ay pagtutol sa con-ass na ang imbing layunin ay ang term extension ni GMA at sa cha-cha na ang maitim na agenda ay iayon sa globalisasyon ang ating Konstitusyon.

It is not only GMA who is interested and will benefit from cha-cha. It is also the foreign capitalists and their local lackeys who are pushing and will gain from revising the Constitution.

GMA is principally concerned with her perpetuation in power while the foreigners are mainly after removing the protectionist provisions of the Constitution. Even as GMA continues to deny her hidden agenda, the foreign capitalists and their local lackeys make no secret of their main motivation. In fact in the Nograles resolution, it is clearly spelled out that the Constitution will be amended to allow foreign ownership of land. The limitation on foreign ownership of strategic industries and utilities are surely next in line.

06-11-2009 Migrant teachers’ rights should be protected

Press Statement

Migrant teachers’ rights should be protected

The Partido ng Manggagawa (Labor Party – Philippines) is deeply concerned about the welfare of Filipino teachers who are deployed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

We have an ongoing probe into the plight of these migrant Filipino teachers.  Our party is saddened that they have been subjected to iniquitous treatment and are still expose to very hard circumstances.

Leaving their families back home to be able to pursue the American dream, these teachers risked everything thinking that their credentials and talents will get them through.

Definitely, these people have discovered that following this dream is not at all easy. Hard work, it seems, is not even enough.  In their case, they have to put themselves and their families in deep indebtedness, risk all their families’ resources for a shot at their dream of being financially successful in the future.

What is mainly pulling them down, however, is their being subject to a manipulative placement agency whose only objective it seems is to squeeze the maximum payments from them.  What the agency is employing is clearly a form of debt bondage.  Universal Placement International, headed by Lourdes Navarro, has put in place a web of policies and measures to ensure that these teachers would all be fully dependent upon the agency.  Navarro employs threats, intimidation and deceit to ensure conformity from these teachers.
